"... She didn't ask him to be a bait for them; it was his sole decision.
Areskius and his mate happened to catch a bad luck. A very bad one.
Firstly, his aqorta¹ was about to give birth to his children, two sons. He was very excited.
He did find a safe place, far away from any possible enemy. He'd prefer Abeiriat, but his mate wanted to do it outside the demon realm. The demon didn't dare to question her idea, though he knew it wasn't a good one.
Secondly, they were found. By a group of weird creatures - mostly humans or human-like beings, and they did hurt his aqorta, though they were just passing by and didn't harm anyone for all their time here. Areskius sent her inside the safe place - an abandoned church, hoping that the wound would heal before his demlings² go out.
His kind was peaceful unless provoked, but even after what the group did, he only opted for saving some time without killing anyone.
He was careful not to use his magic or fire, blocking the attacks, avoiding being hit and gently (without much force) knocking the intruders.
Areskius almost forgot about the link he had with aqorta - he was too used to feeling her presence via telepathy, when suddenly the presence vanished. The link just became dead.
The dragon stopped for a moment, searching for his love, but he could detect nothing. Even when she slept or was unconscious, he could tell where she was.
She could switch him off, for what reason though? They loved each other and planned to raise the kids together, if not getting more of them.
A sharp pain in the right wing returned him back to reality.
- The demon in the church has turned into glowing dust and disappeared! - a new fanatic shouted, running from the abandoned church his mate was in. - Let's finish this one!
Glowing dust meant only one thing.
She di-... she couldn't... die. Not when they planned so much ahead!
He ran to the entrance, but all he saw was blood. Too much blood even for a demon to lose. As the dragon came further, he spotted the necklace he gave her as a gift.
She couldn't... die. Perhaps she faked it, taking his sons to hide.
He noticed the glowing golden dust on the necklace, felt it with his fingers.
She couldn't...-
She didn't-...
and then something clicked in his mind.
A few fast fanatics he played with were near him. He heard the spear, but didn't sense the pain on his neck from a cut.
When he turned to face them, his eyes weren't golden anymore.
- Pathetic little monkeys, - he chuckled, before sending the closest human into the wall. In four parts..."
